Interviewing the Person
Begin by asking the person’s name, and use it when you speak to the person. Position yourself at eye level
with the person and speak clearly, calmly and in a friendly manner, using age-appropriate language. Try to
provide as much privacy as possible for the person while you are conducting the interview, and keep the
interview brief. The mnemonic SAMPLE (Figure 2-1) can help you remember what you should ask about. If
possible, write down the information you learn during the interview or, preferably, have someone else write
it down for you. Be sure to give the information to emergency medical services (EMS) personnel when
they arrive. It may help them to determine the type of medical care that the person should receive.
