I woke up in an alleyway, in the middle of a job. Rich looking fellow with a
fat wallet, begging to be cut away. I forgot all about our current affairs,
my party, the Shatterspire; I felt younger.
To my surprise, the target was quick. I was unable to sever the sack of coin,
and the next thing I saw was a scimitar between my ribs and my friends
running away. The man looked shocked, not even realising what he had done.
I was left for dead on the streets, no one came back to help. It wasn’t the
wound that hurt the most, but rather the knowledge that I was going to die
alone, on the streets of a city I loathed.
I had the strength to get up, though staggering all over the place as if I were
drunk. The streets were completely empty, all doors locked, all windows shut;
I now realise that this test took my deepest fears and threw them at me. I
quickly hurried back to a place I still occasionally visited, where I was
raised as a servant, Belkinus Mansion. Hoping to find mum before I bled
out, I went through the back entrance with the key I still have. It was
completely empty, apart from the Lord himself atop the stairs, staring down
directly at me. Filthy creature of nobility, all I ever wanted was to see him
rot in prison. I remember the time I slipped a stolen ring into his pocket and
pointed out the “glinty thing in the Lord’s garments” to the guest whom I stole
it from. Fun times.
I asked him sincerely for help, but the cold bastard had no intention to
assist. As we were hurling insults at each other, I noticed that my magic
was missing, and a voice spoke at the back of my mind. It told me that my
