Experiment in Barton’s pendulum
What happens when pendulum X is made to oscillate?
• When pendulum X is swung into oscillation, all the other
pendulums swing.
• Pendulum D swings with maximum amplitude.
• This is because, the length of the pendulum X = length of
the pendulum D.
• The frequency of oscillation of the pendulum X =
frequency of oscillation of the pendulum D.
• Resonance has occurred in pendulum D and caused it to
swing with maximum amplitude.
Exercise 6.1.2
1. The figure shows a simple pendulum with a mass of
40.0 g and a length, L of 20.0 cm. The pendulum
makes 20 complete oscillations in 18.80 seconds.
Relationship between period of oscillation, T of the
simple pendulum with its length, L is expressed in the
formula below as :
C A Highest L where g is gravitational
Lowest B Position T= π2
Position g acceleration.
