Different states
All substances are made from tiny
particles that are arranged in different Liquid
ways depending on whether they Materials flow when
are solid, liquid, or gas. they are liquid. The
particles are close but
move past each other.
Solid
Solid materials keep
their shape. The
particles are very
close together. Water vapor is
Ice is water
as a solid. water as a gas.
Gas
Materials move in all
directions when they
are gas. The particles
are far apart.
Drinking water is
water as a liquid.
Shifting states
The same material can
change from being solid
to liquid and from liquid
to gas when it is heated,
and back again as it
cools. These changes
are called melting,
solidifying, evaporating,
and condensing. Melting When we heat Solidifying When a liquid Evaporating When a Condensing When water
a solid, it melts and like this lava cools, liquid changes into a gas, turns from a gas back
changes to a liquid. it becomes solid. it evaporates as steam. into a liquid form, this
is condensing.
