           WORLD

           WAR II

The British pledged to defend the people of Singapore during World War

II. However, they proved to be ultimately more concerned with the defence

of Britain and left Singapore to the mercy of the Japanese. The fall of
Singapore to the Japanese provides us with a lesson as to why we should

not be so foolish as to leave the defence of our people to others.

Creation of identity – an “imagined identity” of what it meant to be a

          citizen of a country.

Desire for national identity and national unity.
