The British pledged to defend the people of Singapore during World War
II. However, they proved to be ultimately more concerned with the defence
of Britain and left Singapore to the mercy of the Japanese. The fall of
Singapore to the Japanese provides us with a lesson as to why we should
not be so foolish as to leave the defence of our people to others.
Creation of identity – an “imagined identity” of what it meant to be a
citizen of a country.
Desire for national identity and national unity.
