Are Companies in Kazakhstan, Russia, and the Ukraine
                 "Better Managed" than US Companies?

Ozat Baiserkeyev, Associate Professor, Almaty Management University is a licensed
and certified Affiliate of Management Systems based in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Since 2012, he has used our methodology and tools for organizational assessment,
strategic planning, and performance management in Russia and the Ukraine as well
as Kazakhstan.

These three countries are all Russian speaking former members of the Soviet
Union. The article below is based upon his experiences with applying these tools in
a wide variety of companies in all three nations.

As a certified and licensed consultant at the Management Systems Consulting
Corporation located in Kazakhstan, I began my work on the methodology of the
Pyramid of Organizational Development in 2012. Over the past two years, I was
able to conduct a research project on Growing Pains, Organizational Effectiveness
and Strategic Planning with approximately two dozen companies in three post-
Soviet era countries -- Kazakhstan, Russia, and Ukraine (or 'KRU'). These
companies I worked with were in a wide variety of completely different industries
(see main paper).

The size of the organizations, in terms of staff, varied significantly from a few
people to a few thousand employees. A similar variance was observed in terms of
revenues (called "turnover" in these post-Soviet era countries).

Purpose

Although these projects were for the purpose of assisting these companies with
their organizational development needs, it also permits us the opportunity to do
some research on this "database." As part of this research, I utilized the
Management Systems "Growing Pains Survey" and the "Survey of Organizational
Effectiveness" (for information about these surveys click below).

Stepping back for the individual company projects and analyzing the data derived
as a whole provided some interesting insights about business in this part of the
world. The principal questions I want to focus on is the title of this article: "Are
Companies in Kazakhstan, Russia, and Ukraine "Better Managed" than US
Companies"? The criteria I used to address this question are:

                                                                    27
