Professor Stephen Dobson

Stephen Dobson has a Ph.D in assessment and a Ph.D in refugee work. His is currently Professor
and Dean of Education in the Faculty of Education, Victoria University of Wellington,
New Zealand. He teaches courses on student assessment to undergraduates and post-graduates and
has held many workshops for in-service teachers.
Professor Dobson is the guest professor at the Centre for Life Long Learning, Inland Norway
University of Applied Sciences, Norway and recently completed a term as a member of the
Teacher Education Expert Standing Committee for the Australian Institute for Teaching and School
Leadership (AITSL).
His research and teaching interests include assessment and evaluation (oral assessment,feedback
processes, assessment for learning), professional development, educational philosophy(bildung),
inclusion, classroom studies, youth studies and refugee studies.
His most recent books are Learning Cities - Multimodal Explorations and Placed Pedagogies (co-
edited Sue Nichols and Stephen Dobson, Springer 2018) and Assessing the Viva in Higher
Education - Chasing Moments of Truth (Springer 2017).
He was previously Dean of Education at the University of South Australia and continues in an
adjunct professor role. Professor Dobson was appointed to the position of Dean of Education at
Victoria University of Wellington in July 2018, a position that draws upon his global experience of
education systems and expertise in many areas of pedagogy, including early childhood, schooling
and lifelong learning.
