FROM MY DESK By Monika Biernacki OAM “ LIFE INSTEAD OF DEATH ” - A NO-KILL SHELTER
“ When you are hardly coping with the dogs dumped in the pounds before Christmas and the relentless
calls from people wanting to get rid of their dogs and cats it seems there is always a Christmas surprise
to push you even harder and further to help more in need.” Monika
As 2021 draws to a close and I sit to
write my editorial my mind is full of the
suffering and neglect of our recently
rescued husky group. Many of you
have read the social media pages from
Central Coast Animal Care Facility who
have found some 60-80 arctic breeds
and others in a hoarding situation. Dee
and her friends have done an amazing
“ rescue in a really difficult situation.
I was so surprised how
gentle and easy to handle We had 2 spare yards at the shelter but
these dogs were given they when we read of the plight we knew we
have had virtually no human needed to help. We have taken 22 dogs
” the weight they should be. They were
contact. so far, 2 pregnant and all less than half
certainly scared when being transferred
from one transport to another and had
never been caged. NONE of them gave
as much as a snarl, growl or bared its
teeth. They were so gentle to handle
and so receptive to the human touch.
After a short stop at our vets for heath
checks, vaccinations etc they arrived
at our shelter. Washing them was
interesting in the hydrobath but they
enjoyed being clean afterwards. It was
probably their first bath ever and the
noise of the bath would have been
pretty scary! Next was the brushing –
OMG I have never seen so much fur.
We are fortunate a lot of volunteers
have come forward to help with this.
The dogs are so gentle and love
hanging around humans.
Now Luis, our Kennel Manager, has
the unenviable task of figuring out
compatibility between dogs and trying
to integrate the very shy ones. Of
course we have the added issue of
Monika pictured with some of the rescued huskies...
