TOWERING ICE SHELF
Where the vast ice sheets that shroud
Antarctica spill out over the ocean,
they form gigantic floating ice shelves.
The biggest, the Ross Ice Shelf, is the
size of France. The immensely thick
floating ice forms a sheer cliff that is
more than 370 miles (600 km) long,
and towers up to 164 ft (50 m) above
the surface of Antarctica’s Ross Sea.
