ANDEAN PEAKS
The Andes are at their most dramatic in
southern Chile, where the jagged spines of
the Torres del Paine soar straight up into the
sky. These granite peaks originally welled up
as molten magma within the fold mountains.
The surrounding rock has been scoured away
by glacier ice to leave the much harder,
more resistant granite core.
