COLORFUL CRYSTALS

                                                                                                         Chemical-rich water evaporating
                                                                                                         in the searing heat of Dallol leaves
                                                                                                         behind thick deposits of salt
                                                                                                         crystals. These crystals are stained
                                                                                                         with rusty red iron, yellow sulfur,
                                                                                                         and other minerals. Dark cinder
                                                                                                         cones dotting the skyline mark the
                                                                                                         sites of small volcanic eruptions.
