P. 39

Example 10:

        Perform the following integration,

                              4       2   + 4
                            ∫                 2
                             3  (   − 2)(   + 4)

        Whenever you see an integral of this form you need
        to use partial fractions.

                        2   + 4                                +
                                        =             +
                                                            2
                               2
                 (   − 2)(   + 4)          (   − 2)      (   + 4)
        This becomes,

                                   2
                 2   + 4 =   (   + 4) + (     +   )(   − 2)

                                          2
                          2
                   =      + 4   +      − 2     +      − 2
        Equate coefficients
                                    0 =    +

                                  2 = −2   +

                                   4 = 4   − 2

        Write them in this form
                                    +    + 0   = 0

                                0   − 2   +    = 2
                                2   + 0   −    = 2
