DEFINING MOMENTS

                            EARHART’S SOLO FLIGHT

Amelia Earhart is renowned largely because of her
mysterious disappearance, but she should be equally
remembered for her groundbreaking flights. Her trans-
atlantic and trans-continental US flights stand out, of
course, but in 1935 she became the first person to fly
solo from Hawaii to California, landing in Oakland
on 11 January. She even enjoyed “the most
memorable cup of hot chocolate I’ve ever
had” at 8,000 feet over the Pacific.
