DEFINING MOMENTS
NORIEGA SURRENDERS
Manuel Noriega, military ruler of Panama since 1983,
surrendered to US forces in January 1990. Noriega had
previously been working with the CIA as an asset, helping
to direct money and weapons through to Latin America
in support of US interests. However, he had also
been involved in the drug trade and was indicted
on racketeering, drug smuggling and money
laundering when he stood trial in Florida
between 1991 and 1992.
