                                                  Bartolome Esteban Murillo.
                                                  The artist excelled not only as
                                                  the master of charmingly
                                                  sentimental depictions of the
                                                  Madonna, but was also an
                                                  excellent observer of every-
                                                  day life in 17th-century Spain.
