P. 655
Figure 9-13. Seriously, which way would you rather read an article? Like this (top)? Or in the calm
peace of this (bottom)? Not only does Reader get rid of all the ads and clutter and blinking, but it
even knits multipage articles together into one seamless, scrolling page, as though it’s an ebook. Use
the space bar or two fingers to scroll, as usual.
To exit Reading view, hit again. Best. Feature. Ever.
Here’s some of the fun you can have in Reading view:
Display options. Click or tap the screen to reveal a toolbar with
options for changing the background color and type size, reading
the page aloud, using Microsoft’s grammar tools, printing the page,
or expanding the window to full screen. Figure 9-11 shows the
idea.
Definitions. New in the May 2019 Update: In Reading view,
double-click a word (or tap with your finger) to open a little box
containing its definition—and even a button so you can hear
how it’s pronounced.
Line focus. Also new: Edge can highlight one line at a time in
color (or two, or five), dimming the rest of the screen, to help you
focus on what you’re reading. This feature can be a big help to
beginning readers or people with dyslexia, for example.
To try it, click or tap the screen to open the controls toolbar; hit
“Learning tools”→“Reading preferences,” and turn on “Line
focus.” Choose an icon for one, three, or five lines highlighted at a
time. You’ll see the effect right away. Use the arrow keys, or the
arrow buttons on the screen, to move the highlighting and scroll
the page as you read.
The Download Manager
When you click a link to download something from a web page, Edge
records it in the Downloads list (Figure 9-14).
