                                     Hôtel de Ville
                                     The town hall, planned and constructed between
                                     1750 and 1779, was formerly the pilgrims’ hostelry.

                                         Discovered along the Roman
                                          Aurelian Way (see p129), this
                                         1st-century milestone is now
                                          on display at the entrance
                                                to the cloisters.




                                     Cloisters
                                     The cloisters are at the
                                     centre of the Royal
                                     Monastery, so called
                                     because the French
                                     kings were its priors.
                                     The Domincan friars
                                     left in 1957 and it is
                                     now a hotel-restaurant.
