       American Civil War’s first battle.
The fort, which stands on an
       island at the entrance to
       Charleston harbor, was controlled
by Union troops. In April 1861,
       the Confederate army besieged
       the fort. When Union troops
tried to bring in supplies, the
       Confederates, who had occupied
       nearby Fort Johnson, unleashed
a 34-hour bombardment. Union Flowers in bloom at Audubon Swamp Gardens, Magnolia Plantation
