       National Parks
       For many visitors, the highlight of a visit to the
       US is to experience the country’s sublime
       scenery and abundant wildlife. Some 84 million
       acres (34 million hectares) of pristine splendor
       have been preserved as national parks, found in
       all of the 50 states. From Acadia National Park on
       the rugged coast of Maine to the deserts of
       Death Valley in California, the parks encompass
       a variety of terrain, as well as the habitats of
       several endangered species. Most have a full   Yellowstone National Park (see pp576–7) in
