THE ORIGINAL ULSTER
VOLUNTEER FORCE
Members of the unionist militia the Ulster Volunteers take
part in a drill, ready to defend the province from the
imposition of Home Rule. Many Ulster Protestants
feared being governed by a Catholic-majority
government in Dublin. In 1912, they formed
a militia; two years later, they smuggled
20,000 German rifles into Larne.
