       Váci street has been budapest’s fashionable area for walking,
       meeting in cafés and shopping in elegant boutiques since the
       early 19th cen tury. Its attractive promenade is an enjoyable

       4 Vörösmarty Square
       A Carrara marble monument to
       the poet Mihály Vörösmarty stands
       in this square. It was created by
       Ede Telcs and sym bolizes the
       Hungarian nation united in the
       poets’s words: “Your homeland,
       Hungary, serve unwaveringly”.

                              Thonet House was built in
                              1888–90 by Ödön Lechner
                              (see p58) and Gyula Pártos.
                              It stands today in its original   P E S T I   U
                              form, featuring Zsolnay
                              ceramics from Pécs.

                         Péterffy Palace is Pest’s only   Remains of Contra
                         Baroque house. It was built by   Aquincum (see p23)
                         András Meyerhoffer in 1755 for
                         the magistrate, János Péterffy.
