Taking the fl ank
04 As the three other tanks move
forward, Vlug continues to advance
under heavy fi re and moves to the
side. He is able to take out the third
from a fl anking position.

The pistol shot
03 After spotting Vlug,
troops emerge from the second
tank and fi re at him. He pulls his
pistol and shoots one dead. The
others retreat back into the tank,
which he quickly takes out with
the rocket launcher.

take cover, Pfc Vlug takes a rocket
launcher and leaves his position of
safety. Under heavy fire from machine
guns and 37mm cannons, he charges
forward, arms the launcher and
destroys the first tank.

The roadblock
01 The 32nd Division
advances slowly south on the
Ormoc Road, battling against
tough resistance hidden under
the cover of rainforest and
mountainous terrain. After setting
up a roadblock, fi ve north-bound
Japanese tanks approach.
