Palaung villages, where you can stay overnight in a bamboo house. You can also
make the short trip to the picturesque ruin of Sakandar, which was the summer
palace of the saopha of Hsipaw, until it was damaged during World War II and
eventually destroyed by the government, who were fearful it would become a symbol
of Shan autonomy.
Kyaukme was an established tea-dealing centre well before the arrival of the British
in the 1890s (see box, p.324), and today the tea warehouses are concentrated in a
block southeast of the railway station. The area beyond is dotted with characterful old
buildings, while the central market between Pinlon Street and Aung San Road attracts
a mix of Shan, Bamar and Palaung customers.
