Brief history
According to local legend, the Shwedagon dates back to around 588 BC, making it the
oldest stupa in Myanmar, if not the world – although more likely it was originally built
by the Mon between the sixth and tenth centuries. Mon king Binnya U of Bago (ruled
1348–84) had the stupa raised to a height of 18m, but the temple only really started
taking shape a century later under Queen Shinsawbu (reigned 1453–72), who had the
height of the stupa doubled to 40m and also laid out the terrace around the stupa and
