Kefalloniá and Ithaki
Beautiful, rugged and densely forested, Kefalloniá is the largest
island in the Ionians and the sixth-largest in Greece. It is dominated
by Mount Eros (Aínos) which, at 1,600 m (5,200 ft),
is the highest peak in the archipelago. Dramatic
scenery can be found everywhere. Subterranean
waterways, caves, pebbly beaches, wild mountain
slopes and natural springs all feature. The island
of Ithaki lies off the northeast coast – an unspoiled
idyll widely believed to have been the home of
King Odysseus. Like Kefalloniá, Ithaki is thought
Roman Villa floor
mosaic, Kefalloniá to have been inhabited since prehistoric times.
