TOOLSHED TERRORS
Enter the dark zone of the toolshed at your peril. Danger lurks here for
every do-it-yourself (DIY) enthusiast. In the U.S., one in four people receiving
emergency treatment in the hospital is injured in a DIY accident—that’s
about four million people a year. Next time there’s a quick-fix job to be
done at home, remember this simple truth—the tools are out to get you!
A step too far
Heard the one about the guy who was
airlifted to the hospital with a plank of
wood nailed to his head after falling from
a ladder? It’s not unusual. Ladders cause
more accidents than almost any other
item in the toolshed.
Close shave
Beware—your lawn mower bites!
Don’t adjust the blades with
the motor running or wear
sandals to mow the lawn. You’ll
finish up minus fingers and toes.
Look out for toys left lying in
the grass, as they can bounce
up and hit you in the face! Sticky ending
Glue comes in handy for
different jobs around the house,
but just be careful where you
stick it. People end up in
the hospital glued to all kinds
of objects. Don’t go spilling it on
the toilet seat, as one man did…
Nail power
High on the list of DIY horrors are nail guns. One careless slip
and the nail is buried in your anatomy (usually your hand or
foot) instead of the wall or floor. One man in California had
six nails removed from his skull after a nail-gun accident,
but he survived!
