Anthrax on Gruinard
Research scientists are testing the possibility of using
Department of War, 1942
the deadly bacterial disease anthrax in germ warfare
against Germany. Bombs containing anthrax spores have
been exploded on the remote Scottish island of Gruinard.
Spores were breathed in by the island’s sheep, and
they died within days, proving the highly fatal nature
of the bacteria. The island is likely to remain contaminated
by spores and be uninhabitable for many years.
