Originally colonized by the Minoans in 3000 BC, this volcanic island
erupted in 1620 BC, forming Santoríni’s crescent shape and outlying
islands. Named Thera by the Dorians when they settled here in the 8th
century BC, it was renamed Santoríni, after St Irene, by the Venetians
who acquired the island in the 13th century. Extremely popular with
tourists, Santoríni is simply stunning, with white villages clinging to
        volcanic cliffs above black-sand beaches.
