5 Whitney Museum of American Art
The Whitney Museum is the foremost show The angular
case for American art of the 20th and 21st exterior of the
centuries. It was founded in 1930 by sculptor Whitney Museum
Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney after the
Metropolitan Museum of Art turned down Floor 8
her collection of works by artists such as
Bellows and Hopper. From 1966, the Whitney
was located on the Upper East Side; it moved
to the present building designed, by Renzo
Piano, in 2015. The Whitney Biennial, held in
even years, is the most significant exhibition
of new trends in American art.
