HABITATS



        Most animals have a particular set of
        surroundings, called their habitat, in which
        they thrive and survive. Each habitat, be it a
         desert or a tropical forest, is shaped by a
         number of features including rainfall, altitude
          (height above sea level), temperature, and what
          kind of plants grow there. Here is a selection of
          just some of the many habitats found on Earth,
           with examples of the animals that live in them.





                                                                                                                 CONIFEROUS FOREST
                                                                                                               Blanketing northern North
                                                                                                               America, Europe, and Asia,
                                                                                                               these dense forests of pines
                            CORAL REEF
                                                                                                               and other conifers tolerate
                  Found in shallow, tropical seas,
                                                                                                               long, cold winters. In the short
                   coral reefs are constructed by

                  and shelter for a rich variety of
                                                                                                               seed-eating birds, hares,
                  small fish and other creatures,
                                                                                                               moose, wolves, and lynx. To

                                                                              AFRICAN SAVANNA
                                                                            This vast grassland, dotted with trees,
                                                                            is rich in animal life. It is hot, with
                                                                            alternating rainy and dry seasons.
                                                                            Large herds of grazing animals, such
                                                                           as zebras, are stalked by predators
                                                                           including lions and hyenas.





















                                                     MOUNTAIN
                                Mountainous regions have several habitats.
                             The higher the altitude, the colder and windier
                              the conditions, and the fewer animals that can
                                   survive there. These grazing guanaco in
                                    the Andes live between lower forested
                                        areas and craggy mountain peaks.
