HABITATS
Most animals have a particular set of
surroundings, called their habitat, in which
they thrive and survive. Each habitat, be it a
desert or a tropical forest, is shaped by a
number of features including rainfall, altitude
(height above sea level), temperature, and what
kind of plants grow there. Here is a selection of
just some of the many habitats found on Earth,
with examples of the animals that live in them.

AFRICAN SAVANNA
This vast grassland, dotted with trees,
is rich in animal life. It is hot, with
alternating rainy and dry seasons.
Large herds of grazing animals, such
as zebras, are stalked by predators
including lions and hyenas.
MOUNTAIN
Mountainous regions have several habitats.
The higher the altitude, the colder and windier
the conditions, and the fewer animals that can
survive there. These grazing guanaco in
the Andes live between lower forested
areas and craggy mountain peaks.
