THE HIST OR Y OF IRELAND  43

                                       Plantation Ireland
James I realized that force alone could not
                                       stabilize Ireland. The Plantation programme
uprooted the native Irish and gave their land to
Protestant settlers from England and Scotland.
London livery companies organized many of
the new settlements. The policy created loyal
                                       garrisons who supported the Crown.

       The Siege of Drogheda (1649)
       Between 1649 and 1652 Cromwell’s army avenged
attacks on Protestant settlers with ruthless efficiency.
Here Cromwell himself directs the gunners
       bombarding Drogheda.

                                               Ireland, used his
                                               position to enrich
                                               his family. In 1593 he
