u Street-by-Street: Lecce
Lecce was the site of the Greek Messapi
settlement. It became an important centre of
the Roman Empire, and in the Middle Ages
developed a strong tradition of scholarship.
Much of the architecture is in the highly
decorative Lecce Baroque style, which flourished
in the 1600s and earned the city the name of
Florence of the South. This style was possible
