INTERVIEW
“PRINCESS LEIA IS A
CHARACTER I’VE LOVED
MY WHOLE LIFE.”
already strong, but not yet as
tough as the princess we met
in A New Hope. She’s intelligent
and politically aware, but up until
now has been relatively sheltered.
It’s one thing to know about the
troubles of the Empire—another
to see them for herself, and still
another to try taking those
problems on.
Is it intimidating writing for
such an iconic character?
I should’ve been intimidated
before writing Leia in Bloodline,
but I wasn’t. Princess Leia is a
character I’ve loved my whole
life. I practically spent 40 years
asking myself what it would be
like to be her—and then Lucasfi lm
gave me a chance to ask those
questions in print! Having written
Bloodline defi nitely helped
prepare me for this.
How do you find writing in a
franchise compared to writing
your own novels?
I was flabbergasted the fi rst time
I was told a spaceship couldn’t
be somewhere, because it was
canonically somewhere else!
When you write books, you get
used to thinking that whatever
you write goes! The upsides,
however, more than make up
for the few limitations. First of all,
I get to write Star Wars! Second,
George Lucas created an amazing
world that’s supported with fi lms
and television shows and toys and
games and other books, and I get
to draw on all of that to fl esh out
my own work—and the fans are
great. They share the enthusiasm
and excitement, and that’s the
greatest aspect of it all.
