LEGO has a wide offi cial roster
of bricks and pieces, but with
the increased sophistication
across all its product lines, new
bricks are sometimes required
to achieve a particular build
element. It’s a detailed and very
serious process.
“LEGO has a whole team
dedicated to developing new
elements,” explains Malloy.
“Every new piece that’s
developed has to go before a
committee and be justifi ed with
why this element should be
produced and why it cannot be
accomplished with the existing
range. The Star Wars line has
brought in a lot of new elements
that have become widely used
across the entire LEGO range.
There’s a wide variety of parts—
wedge plates, new hinges, new
canopy styles. Even parts that
were originally very specifi c to
Star Wars, such as the lightsaber
handle and blade, which seem
at first glance very mono-use
and single-task items, have
become widely popular in sets
across the entire range. You can
find them in LEGO City sets
and even Friends sets. They’re
everywhere.”
The LEGO Star Wars range
has represented in brick form
characters, ships, vehicles, and

but is there anything that Malloy
and Becraft would love to see
added to the collection?
“I’m missing Padmé’s
Nubian Royal Starship from
The Phantom Menace,” says
Malloy. “It’s a major player in
the movie, and LEGO has only
ever produced a couple of tiny
micro scale versions for advent
calendars that are an inch long.”
“I love the weird ships in
particular,” laughs Becraft, “and
the rebel Nebulon-B medical
frigate is particularly iconic. It
would have to be small scale,
but an Ultimate Collector
Series version of that would be
absolutely fantastic.”
Two decades after that fi rst
mind-blowing announcement,
the LEGO Star Wars range is
continuing to evolve, innovate,
and entertain fans, impressing
with a plethora of sets devoted to
all eras of Star Wars, for all ages
and all pockets. “Those of us who
