wouldn’t be out of place among the
           scavengers of Jakku. Upcycling is
great when the existing clothing is
too small (for instance, when there’s
a cool design on a child’s size shirt
but an adult wants to wear it), or
the original material is a little worn
or strained but can be salvaged for
           a new purpose.
Taylor Phillips has found a niche
in turning T-shirts into hoodies and
dresses. “I have a daughter who
is seven and a son who is fi ve. As
I started shopping for outfi ts for
my daughter, I noticed there was
nothing for my son. I knew of a
local friend who would take vintage
           T-shirts and upcycle them into
dresses for little girls and I thought,
‘I bet it wouldn’t be too diffi cult to
do the same for boys’ hoodies.’ So
           I took my mother-in-law’s sewing
           machine and started working on
           them. Finding shirts and remaking
them into something new is always
           an exciting thing.”
              Remember those classic 1970s
           and 1980s Star Wars bedsheets?
           Those are perfect for upcycling.
           “I’ve been wearing true vintage
or a retro aesthetic since I was a
           teen,” shares Janine K. Spendlove.
