with his desire to save Padmé, the sight
of a mighty Jedi Master moving to
murder a defeated opponent convinced
Anakin to intervene and save the fallen
chancellor. The Sith Lord fi nished Mace
off with a burst of Force lightning,
but Skywalker’s decision had already
cemented his destiny.
Immediately thereafter, Anakin
agreed to become Sidious’ apprentice. As
with the majority of the Jedi Council’s
faults, Mace’s good intentions bowed
under imperfect solutions. Anakin’s
downfall transpired over many years,
but the fact that the final straw was
broken because of a Jedi’s betrayal of
their Order’s convictions reinforces the
soundness of Luke’s observations.

ability to sense the darkness to prevent
them from seeing Anakin’s true nature in

time. Such conceit presented itself in the
betrayal Obi-Wan felt during the duel on
Mustafar: he appeared unable to believe
that his former protégé wasn’t living up
to his destiny and bringing balance to
the Force. In an odd way, the Jedi came
across as attached to the idea that a savior
awaited them—yet we know how the
Council viewed emotional attachments.
Overconfidence manifested in other
circumstances, most notably during Mace
Windu’s steadfast denial that Count
Dooku’s Jedi training prohibited him
from being involved in the attempts on
Padmé’s life in Attack of the Clones. Mace’s
dismissal prevented the Council from
uncovering Dooku’s plot sooner and
reflected the high esteem in which they
held themselves. Mace’s words—“Count
Dooku was once a Jedi. He couldn’t
assassinate anyone. It’s not in his
character”—arrogantly implied that the
Jedi stood above the very citizens they
vowed to protect, a poor way to project
an atmosphere of wisdom and humility.
As Obi-Wan and Anakin watched
over Padmé in her chambers on
the trustworthiness of politicians.
Unsurprisingly, Padmé received Anakin’s
full endorsement, due to their personal
history and his forbidden-yet-obvious
affection for Naboo’s former queen. More
surprisingly, Anakin pointed to Supreme
Chancellor Palpatine as someone devoid
of political corruption. Obi-Wan astutely
responded: “I have observed that he is
very clever at following the passions and
prejudices of the senators.”
