Street-by-Street: Penn Quarter
By the mid-20th century, Pennsylvania Avenue, the main
route for presidential inaugural parades, had become tawdry
and run down. It is now a grand boulevard worthy of L’Enfant’s
original vision. Pennsylvania Avenue links the White House to
the US Capitol and is home to some of the city’s main sights.
Opposite the US Navy Memorial is the US National Archives,
housing original copies of the Constitution and the Declaration
of Independence. To the east are the Mellon Fountain and
the National Gallery of Art. The Ronald Reagan Building was
the site of the 1999 NATO summit.
