               How Napoleon came
               unstuck at Waterloo


               Upon hearing that the Coalition forces were advancing
               towards France, and a planned coup, Napoleon decided to
               nip the threat in the bud by meeting and defeating them

               in what we now know as Belgium. He figured that he had
               more chance of doing this by separating the Coalition
               armies and then attacking them separately. While an
               encounter with Prince William of Orange’s Dutch-Belgian
               troops at Quatre-Bras resulted in a stalemate, the French
               army managed to overcome the Prussians at Ligny, leading
               Napoleon to believe that he had quashed that part of the
               threat. However, Gebhard von Blücher’s forces regrouped                                                         Mary Evans
               to help defeat Napoleon at Waterloo (see map above).
