How Napoleon came
unstuck at Waterloo
Upon hearing that the Coalition forces were advancing
towards France, and a planned coup, Napoleon decided to
nip the threat in the bud by meeting and defeating them
in what we now know as Belgium. He figured that he had
more chance of doing this by separating the Coalition
armies and then attacking them separately. While an
encounter with Prince William of Orange’s Dutch-Belgian
troops at Quatre-Bras resulted in a stalemate, the French
army managed to overcome the Prussians at Ligny, leading
Napoleon to believe that he had quashed that part of the
threat. However, Gebhard von Blücher’s forces regrouped Mary Evans
to help defeat Napoleon at Waterloo (see map above).
