Rotterdam, City of Water
One of Rotterdam’s biggest and busiest attractions
is its port, one of the largest ports in the world.
Various operators organize daily tours around the
port area, where you will see container ports,
shipyards and dry docks. The sheer scale of the port
and related industrial areas, which have a turnover
of billions of euros, is quite staggering. Europe’s
largest container port, the Europoort alone Rotterdam
stretches for 40 km (25 miles) along the river banks. The port sees approximately 30,000
vessels docking each year. Germany’s
Ruhr district is the main destination for
the transported goods.
The Port of Rotterdam
The port of Rotterdam, of which only a fraction is shown by this map, stretches
from the town centre to the North Sea coast and is divided into nine areas.
These are, from east to west, the Stadhavens, the Vierhavens, Merwehaven, Old Delfshaven
Waalhaven, Eemhaven, Vondelingenplat, Botlek, Europoort and the Maasvlakte.
The port is still expanding and will soon run out of available space. Land
reclamation from the North Sea is considered the most appropriate solution.
