       Parkstad Veendam (Veendam
Garden City) is so called for the
       lush greenery in the town,
       which for centuries was the
       industrial heart of the peat
       colonies. However, at the end
       of the 19th century, peat-
       cutting fell into decline.
       Although shipping grew in
       importance – Veendam even
had its own maritime school –
       the town retained its character
       as a peat-cutting centre.

       town of Bourtange, whose
       history dates back to 1580,
       when William of Orange
       ordered that a fortress with
       five bastions be built here
       on what had once been
       swampland. The defence
       works were continuously
       upgraded, until the fort
       gradually lost its defensive
       functions. It has now been
       painstakingly restored to its
       18th-century appearance.
       Museum “De Baracquen”
       exhibits artifacts excavated
       in the fort.
         The charming town itself
       lies within a star-shaped
labyrinth of moats. Beautifully restored cloisters at the Ter Apel monastery
