the Brera Quarter
The name of Milan’s traditional Bohemian quarter derives from
the Germanic word braida, which denoted a grassy area. The
presence of art students at the Accademia di Belle Arti and the
world-famous Brera art gallery has contributed to the lively feel
of this quarter, which is reinforced by the many cafés, restaurants,
galleries, antique shops and night-clubs established here. 6 . San Marco

Café Life in the Brera
The cafés and bars of the Brera quarter
are lively and atmospheric, many with
live music. The Tombon de San Marc
(Via San Marco) was once the haunt V I A M E R C AT O
of the stevedores from the nearby
Inside the Jamaica café, Naviglio and now welcomes customers
in Via Brera of all kinds. The famous Jamaica
café (Via Brera) has jazz sessions
on Mondays. Another atmospheric spot is Sans Égal, in the
pedestrian precinct of Via Fiori Chiari, which turns into a sports V I A P O N T E V E T E R O
pub on Sundays (see pp184–5).
