34  INTRODUCING MILAN

       Milan’s Best: Churches and Basilicas

The churches of Milan are built in two basic Santa Maria
architectural styles: Lombard Romanesque, delle Grazie
                                                        Besides being home
which can be seen elsewhere in the region, to Leonardo’s Last
and the Counter-Reformation Mannerism Supper, this church,
of Milan under the Borromeos. The only designed by Solari
exception is the Duomo, a splendid example and Bramante, is a
                                                        marvellous example
of Lombard Gothic. There are very few of Renaissance
examples of older styles. This is partly the architecture
result of destructive invasions and time, (see pp73–5).
but is mostly due to the fact that the city is
built just above the water table, and older
buildings had to be demolished to make
                                                                                  VIA MELCHIORRE GIOIA
