36 INTRODUCING MILAN
Milan’s Best: Museums and Galleries
Besides housing priceless works of art, the museums
and art galleries of Milan also reflect the history of the
city. The Pinacoteca di Brera was founded at the height
of the Enlightenment period and the Ambrosiana is the
result of the patronage of religious art by the Borromeo
family. The Castello Sforzesco collections date from
the period of the Signorie, while the Galleria d’Arte
Moderna and the Museo dell’Ottocento are a sign
of civic commitment to fine arts. The Museo Bagatti
Valsecchi and Poldi Pezzoli, private collections, are Pinacoteca di Brera
