Take to the Slopes
Twice host of the Winter Olympics (Chamonix
Mont Blanc in 1924, Albertville in 1992), the
slopes of the French Alps are legendary. Over
200 ski stations serve as warm, cosy gateways
to some of the world's finest pistes, at eleva
tions of up to 2,456 m (8,058 ft). In winter, take
to the tow lines and gondolas, then fly back
down on your skies or snowboard. In summer,

Kids in the Snow
The pristine, powdery snow
of the Alps creates a glorious
winter wonderland for every
one, especially children. Head
to Le Bourg d’Oisans (p389)
and neighbouring L’Alpe
d’Huez for a wealth of wintry
activities just right for tots
and teens, from building
snow men to sledging down
snowy hills. Further north,
Lac Léman (p387) is a gateway
for families to try their hand
