When the Snow Melts
As the winter snows retreat,
mountain passes reopen,
trails thaw and wildflowers
carpet the hillsides. Use the
ski lifts in Le Bourg d’Oisans
(p389) to reach the heights,
then follow trails to walk or
bike down. See it all from
above, by paragliding or
parasailing in Chamonix-
Mont Blanc and Annecy
(p388). The Ardèche (p382),
with caves honeycombing its
hills, is spelunking heaven.
