EXPERIENCE The Dordogne

                Did You Know?
                Research suggests
                that spotted horses,
               painted at Pech-Merle,
               were alive during the
                    Ice Age.

        THE DORDOGNE FOR
       PREHISTORIC ART

Well-known for its advances in the art world, France is also home to some of
the best preserved prehistoric art on the continent, especially in the Vézère
valley. From the paintings at Lascaux to sculptures found around Les Eyzies,
these works invite you to step back in time.

        Incredible Carvings and Sculptures
Discovered in 1909, the rock shelter of Abri du
Cap Blanc, just outside Les Eyzies (p435), is
home to a life-size frieze of horses sculpted in
the rock. A display of the flint tools found at the
site are on display at the on-site museum,
which also shows a replica of the Magdalenian
Woman and a several “Venuses”. Finely carved
          throwing spears, found at Laugerie-Basse,
near Les Eyzies, are on display at the visi tor’s
          centre there, and
        children can borrow
a tablet to have a vir- Frieze of a
