IMPRESSIONISM
The most famous art
movement to have
originated in France,
Impressionism emer
ged in the late 19th
century. Among the
earliest advocates of
this style were Monet,
Degas and Renoir, who
were inspired by Manet
and broke with the
formal tradition that
previously dominated.
Painting outdoors,
they used delicate
brush work, as well as
light, movement and
colour to capture a
fleeting moment.
Outdoor Artworks
From murals to stunning statues, graffitti to light
installations, public art in France is a great way
to indulge in a bit of culture on the cheap.
Enormous murals by the CitéCreation collec tive
are found in numerous French cities, including
Lyon, Marseille and Paris, while the bold Le
Voyage à Nantes festival brings new art to
Nantes (p298) every year.

French Artists
at Home
The homes of some of
France’s most revered artists,
including Monet and Rodin,
have been converted into
museums where artworks
are complemen ted by a
glimpse into the artist’s
process. The French Riviera is
especially flush with such
museums, featur ing abodes
