Go Beyond the Grape
France is home to a vast array of beer, cider,
liqueurs and eaux de vie (brandies made with
fruit other than grapes). Round out an evening
with a smooth Cognac in Normandy, or a glass
of eau de vie in Alsace. In Brittany, join the
locals by pairing cider with crêpes; and on a
balmy summer evening in the south, take to
an outdoor table to sip
a glass of pastis (an

glasses of Cognac liqueur) before dinner.
Come Harvest Time
Festivals celebrating a bountiful
year abound across France. The
best of the wine festivals must
be the epic Bordeaux Wine
Festival and its Marathon du
Medoc counterpart. The latter
winds through the region’s
vineyards, with runners
marking every mile with a glass.
