Exploring the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg
The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg measures only 80 km (50 miles) from
top to bottom. Its capital, Luxembourg City, is in the southern sector, Liège
where the bulk of the population is settled. Called the Gutland (Good
Land), the south is also the main farming region. The old industrial
heartland of the southwest, the centre of the iron and steel industries, Weiswampach
is known as Minette, or the Red Lands for the ore-tinted colour of the
soil. The north, called the Eisléck or Oesling, is dominated by the Troisvierges
wooded hills of the Ardennes and is more sparsely populated. The Asselborn
famously beautiful landscape of Little Switzerland is in the east.
There are four main rivers: the Sûre, which crosses the Ardennes; Troine
the Alzette, which flows through Luxembourg City; the Moselle, CLERVAUX
which forms the southeastern border with Germany, and Marnach
provides a fertile valley for Luxembourg’s vineyards; and the Hosingen
Our, which marks the rest of the German border. Eschweiler Clerve Our
