. The Assumption of the Virgin
(1610) Pieter Paul Rubens (1577–
1640) was the leading exponent of
Baroque art in Europe, combining
Flemish precision with Italian flair.
In The Assumption of the Virgin, he
suppressed background colours to
emphasize the Virgin’s blue robes.
Madonna with Saint Anne and a
Franciscan Donor (1470) Hugo van
der Goes (c.1430–82) was
commissioned to paint this symbolic
work by the monk shown on the right,
for his personal devotional use.
